| Mahavilachchiya community faces many health problems which are common in most of the remote villages in the dry zone. However, most of them can be prevented through health education and upgrading the health facilities available in the area. The village hospital is doing a valuable service helping the community within its limited resources. The Mahavilachchiya hospital is the only refuge for constant snake bites poisoning, trap gun accidents, child births etc. The critical patients are sent to Anuradhapura hospital which is 40km away and the road full of pot holes delays the journey and causes life threatening conditions for the patient. The most appropriate solution to these problems is therefore not to rush patients to Anuradhapura but to bring the facilities to the village. Hence the existing rural hospital which caters to the needs of more than 20000 residents of the area should be upgraded to the status of a model hospital with the modern facilities like the use of internet for distant consultations (telemedicine). This can be made a reality with the MESH technology which is scheduled to be installed in the village provided the hospital is supplied with a branded computer. Electricity fluctuations are quite frequent here and that often had brought up serious conditions in the labor room. |
